I'm thinking the baby pine cones are on a white pine? We have a number of 60 ft blue spruce across the way which litter our yard with cones every time there is a strong wind. [but I've never investigated their appearance as cone youngsters]
BB, I didn't think to count the needles in a cluster (should be 5 for white pine), but the book I'm looking at now--strangely, it's TREES OF PENNSYLVANIA, but the drawings and photographs are very good--tells me that we're probably looking here at a "branch with staminate flowers."
