Evidence for Thick Ice

Ice shanties on north Lake Leelanau add touches of color to an otherwise monochromatic scene.

  1. I love these! Especially the first one. I wish I knew why I like it best, because then I could apply the insight, but I don't know enough to know why.

  2. Interesting question, Gerry. The middle image has that unnervingly high horizon line, and for all we know we as viewers are out on the ice, whereas in the top shot it's clear we're on shore, looking out. It took me too long to set up for the third shot, and it isn't what I wanted, but because it includes a human being, a man pulling a sled of supplies out to his shanty, I included it.

If I'd only posted one image, it would have been the one you like best.

  3. I like the first one because of the branch in it' the lyrical line of the branch works well with the line of shanties...

  4. Isn't 'lyrical' a beautiful word? Yes, Dawn, I like the organic lines of the near branch and the distant hills in contrast to the geometrical shapes of the shanties.
