March: In the Woods, in the Orchard, On the Hill

Is this winter or spring?
Pockets at the bases of trees tell of warming air and sunshine.

Still, last year's thin, tattered beech leaves hang on.

I love the simplicity of this shot.

Was noticing this morning the angle of shadows--at left, shadows incline to the north; in the center, straight west; at right, to the south. Somehow I'd never seen this aspect of shadows before.

My little tomboy here looks wistful. "Are my friends out? Is it playtime yet?" She cares for little else!

Winter Orchard -- With or Without Color, Do You Think?

First, here's what trees and their shadows on snow look like in black and white:

Then here are the same shots with blue shadows and warm color in the tree bark. The blue shadows distract me, reminding me of The Color Kittens, one of my favorite childhood books.

For me the blue is a distraction, but it does work better at signaling the crisp cold of the day.
