Homage to Old Friend

"Friend of Chris"
This is one of my favorite photos of Chris, because (1) he didn't know he was going to be part of the picture and because (2) he was always such a friend to insects and knew and appreciated them so well. His other loves are shown below, with my old friend in sharper focus. His knowledge and generosity were legendary.

Nature--Not Always Cute and Cuddly

It looked like the remains of some mythical or prehistoric sea serpent, unaccountably cast up between the rows of cherry trees. Only in a tropical jungle would a snake attain such length, so even with the absence of leg bones, what was left could be nothing other than a partial deer skeleton, the spine continuous from jaw to pelvis, the tufts of hair in the grass nearby....

Wasting nothing, Nature brought ants to clean the bones.

Creature From Right Here on Earth

This is actually only the exoskeleton, the carapace-plus, so to speak, the living being long gone -- to bigger and better things? This remnant I found was three inches long.
