Horse Chestnut: Different View

I love chestnut and horse chestnut trees and was pleased by this look at fallen blossoms on the ground and the shadow of the characteristic leaf.

  1. I remember finding some blossoms last spring, beautiful falling on the dirt road I was walking. I love the chestnuts in the fall too...is this the kind that make 'buckeyes?"

  2. Yes, exactly, Dawn. "Buckeyes" are what I would pick up from my paternal grandfather's driveway in Columbus, Ohio. I loved to polish them and fill my pockets with smooth, glossy nuts. We had none at home, so they seemed very exotic to me.

  3. I remember walking to junior high under a chestnut tree and picking up a nut or two to carry along with me. Years (many) later when I was at UM as an over 50 student I found one I carried with me all fall. Feels so good to the touch.

  4. That is a fine photo, and an approach I never thought of when I was tracking the progress of our neighborhood chestnut orchard. Must spend more time thinking about shadows.

  5. Okay, Gerry, I confess. My first thought was to post three blooming chestnut photos, with this as the third, the culminating shot. Then I realized the other two diluted the overall effect. Less is more. I'm still working on myself to get that lesson learned.
